"Opposites Abstract: Finding Common Ground," a compelling exhibition that unites the distinct styles of husband-and-wife artists, Mary GrandPré and Tom Casmer.

Mary GrandPré’s abstract works are rich in style, color, and light, drawing viewers into a world of fluid movement and layered meaning. In contrast, Tom Casmer’s precise compositions reflect a meticulous attention to form and detail, offering a grounded counterpoint to GrandPré’s expressive style. Together, their works reveal a creative dialogue that celebrates individuality while finding common ground.

"Opposites Abstract" explores the power of unity within difference. It encourages viewers to reflect on the ways diversity can foster connection and strength, resonating with themes of harmony and shared purpose.

This message is made even more impactful through the artists’ shared commitment to giving back: all proceeds from the artists’ portion of artwork sales will be donated to support firefighters in California, honoring their bravery and resilience in the face of disaster.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Mary GrandPré and Tom Casmer first crossed paths while teaching at the College of Visual Arts in St. Paul in the early ’90s. Their connection grew when Casmer invited GrandPré to speak to his illustration class, sparking a mutual admiration that evolved into love.

For nearly two decades, they have lived and worked side by side in Sarasota, creating in separate studios just steps apart. Though their styles differ—Casmer’s structured and mechanical, GrandPré’s fluid and intuitive—they continually influence each other. Daily conversations about form, color, and composition shape their work, with casual studio visits often sparking new ideas.

Their art remains in constant dialogue, mirroring the rhythm of their relationship. This joint exhibition is not just a showcase of two distinct styles but a testament to a shared creative life built on years of learning, inspiring, and creating together.
